A new cargo village has been given the green light by Abu Dhabi's Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) to meet the continuous increase of air cargo volume handled at Abu Dhabi Airport.

Hani Khorsheed of the DCA said at Asian Aerospace yesterday that the cargo village will enhance and upgrade the existing facilities at the airport cargo terminal, tripling the handling capacity.

This project is the first of three integrated phases and should be completed within 20 months. It covers establishment of air cargo stores over an area of 8,500m2 on the ground floor, including handling equipment. The initial phase also includes offices for cargo village staff and customs officials.

External works relating to this project include a new loading area to accommodate all sizes of trucks.

"This project will enable airlines, forwarders and trade companies to have the necessary area for storage, management and supervision," says Khorsheed. "The stores have a unique design for the management offices that overlook the stores. This makes follow-up, operation and supervision over the stores by users much easier."
