Lockheed Martin has awarded a $80-90 million contract to Goodrich for the supply of pylons for the C-5 Galaxy military transport fleet.

The pylons are part of a system development and demonstration (SDD) contract that Lockheed Martin received from the United States Air Force. The company is prime contractor for the USAF's C-5 reliability enhancement and re-engining programme (RERP).

The SDD contract covers the flight test, engineering and hardware requirements for engine pylons.

"Goodrich has a history of success with Lockheed Martin on this programme," says Curtis Reusser, vice-president and general manager, Product and Process Definition. "We were the supplier of more than 500 pylons for the original C-5A and C-5B programmes.

"That experience served as the foundation for new technologies and a lean design/manufacturing approach. As a result, Lockheed Martin is able to offer the USAF a unique pylon design rooted in a proven manufacturing process."

Steve Kays, Lockheed Martin Strategic Airlift programmes material director, says: "A robust design and low maintenance are always requirements for the USAF. With the C-5 they were also in search of a way to reduce ownership costs.
