Rohde & Schwarz (R&S) is moving ahead with its recently-awarded contract to supply SITA with 400 of its Series 4200 VHF transceivers to expand the worldwide AIRCOM data network.
SITA plans to use the transceivers to modernise and expand AIRCOM, which ensures communications between the flight operations centres on the ground and the aircraft.
Philip Clinch, SITA vice president of aircraft communications and messaging, says: "The AIRCOM network is made up of more than 1,000 VHF radios that have been deployed since 1984 in 160 countries around the world. The modernised and expanded data network will provide the airlines with better radio coverage and faster data transmission.”
The R&S Series 4200 allows for software updates over an internet connection and they can be operated for many years without any staff on site. With many radio stations located in highly-inaccessible areas low maintenance is key and the transceivers are equipped with a precision oscillator that requires no calibration for 15 years.
The VHF transceivers from Rohde & Schwarz allow data communications in accordance with the ACARS and VDL Mode 2 standards.
