A world-first led to Hamburg Airport winning the Infrastructure category for being the first airport to be certificated to EU environmental management regulations and international ISO standards.
The airport's environmental management system was certified in April 1998 and at the beginning of this year it added to its environmental record with validation of its EMS according to the EU's Eco Audit.
Judges acknowledged that meeting the environmental standards for both certificates displays a "first class environmental approach".
The finalists were Kuala Lumpur International Airport for completing the Kuala Lumpur International Airport within six years from the design phase to opening and Northrop Grumman for advances in air traffic control safety and efficiency through the ASR-12 airport surveillance radar.
