UK-based passenger entertainment service provider Mezzo has launched its tablet computer-based CareSystem. The touch screen computers come in different sizes between 5in and 10in (12.7-25.4cm).
They are based on commercially available hardware that has been adapted for use on aircraft, for example, through more ruggedized casings, increased battery capacity and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags against theft.
The handheld computers can more easily keep apace with other consumer technology than a fixed inflight entertainment system, says chief executive Dave Sampson.
Especially as some of the latest computer games require "gesture" commands, such as tilting the device, which are processed through accelerometers and inclinometers inside the tablet, it would not be possible to offer such games on a system that is installed in the seatback, he adds.
