Korean Air (KAL), Air France, Delta, and Aeromexico are studying the formation of a multilateral cargo alliance to complement their yet-to-be-branded global passenger tie-up.
Assistant general manager in KAL's cargo marketing and logistics unit, Koo Hoi-Jung, says the partners opened a feasibility study into such an alliance in January. Koo, who is involved in KAL's studyefforts, says a formal cargo agreement could be signed in June.
The airlines are to launch formally their passenger alliance shortly and outline how they intend to compete with Star, oneworld and the "Wings" group, led by KLM and Northwest Airlines.
While Air France is also a strong cargo player, Aeromexico operates only a handful of freighters and Delta has none. Koo says while this may seem to be a problem, "we see it from a different angle because Delta has - lots of traffic rights and a huge domestic network".
