L-3 Communications' Security and Detection Systems division is developing a new range of airport security systems for screening passengers and their baggage.

The systems are based around multiview tomography (MVT) X-ray, millimetre wave (MMW) radar and explosives detection system (EDS) technology.

The latest MVT detectors are a development of L-3's existing systems that are in use at key international airports around the world, processing up to 1,800 bags per hour.

L-3 (Hall 4, A12) is also working with the US aviation authorities to see if the MVT can be coupled with eXaminer, the company's EDS certified by the US Transportation Security Administration.

A passive MMW radar system is also expected to start trials towards the end of 2004. MMWs can pass through clothing and packaging to detect ceramic weapons, plastic explosives, drugs and other contraband.

The system is based on L-3's proven missile seeker automatic target recognition technology, which has been used by the US military for the last 20 years.
