A new experimental aircraft engine is to be launched next week by CanPower Aviation. The 90kW (120hp) XS200 is designed to compete with established manufacturers, and could reduce US Federal Aviation Administration concerns about the small choice of engines for its planned light sport category.
Ontario-based CanPower is completing ground tests of the engine and has two light aircraft available for flight testing soon after the launch, says marketing manager Mike McGee. Engine deliveries are expected to begin in September, he adds.
The engine, with dual electronic ignition, is specifically designed for aviation, says McGee. CanPower hopes for a long time between overhauls, and is studying dual-carburettor and fuel-injected versions.
