Lockheed Martin is grouping its telecommunications and selected satellite businesses into a new division to chase the fast expanding global telecommunications service market.
Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications becomes a sixth business sector for the group, bringing together Intersputnik, a joint venture for launching US spacecraft with Proton rockets; the nine-satellite Astrolink system; the existing telecommunications business and a stake in a venture with General Electric. GE American Communications and Lockheed Martin will deploy a new communications satellite system in July 1999 for markets such as television in Asia Pacific.
