Lockheed Martin is to start delivery of 306 M3 modification kits to upgrade the capability of European-operated F-16s. The kits include jam-resistant communications, improved helmet display units and new US smart weapons as well as other minor upgrades. The total programme value, approximately $142 million, also includes an option for 39 additional kits, plus spares and support. The M3 upgrade will be applied to aircraft operated by the air forces of Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway which have already received with the F-16A/B mid-life update. Portugal is carrying out this update under a separate contract.
