Lockheed Martin (Outdoor 21) has been awarded contracts worth $22.8 million from the US Marine Corps Systems Command to upgrade and provide field support for tactical missile defence radar systems used to protect allied soldiers Iraq.

The company is supplying transmitters, receivers and power supplies for three AN/TPS-59(V)3 radar systems and spares in a contract worth $13.8 million.

The USMC has also awarded Lockheed Martin a $9m contract to provide five years of post-production support and contracted engineering technical services (CETS) for 11 AN/TPS-59(V)3 radars currently deployed around the world.

As the original equipment manufacturer of the AN/TPS-59, Lockheed Martin has provided periodic updates to the system's electronics and software since the mid-1980s.

The all-solid state AN/TPS-59(V)3 can be integrated with other sensors for improved launch and impact point prediction. The radar's 740km (400nm) range exceeds the range of 90% of the tactical ballistic missiles in use in the world today, and its mobility allows it to be forward-based to further extend the range.
