Information technology specialist Logica has won a €10 million ($9 million) contract from Alcatel Space to supply the Check Set element of the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS) - the first phase of Europe's satellite navigation (satnav) programme.
EGNOS is being developed by the European Space Agency, Eurocontrol and the European Commission to improve the accuracy of the global positioning system (GPS). From the four EGNOS ground stations Check Set will provide an independent verification of the GPS correction signal that is sent to Inmarsat satellites for delivery to EGNOS users, says Pat Norris, Logica marketing manager.
Logica is also keen on an infrastructure role on Galileo - Europe's second satnav system.
