The Macedonian defence ministry announced plans on 6 January to transform the capabilities of its aviation force, in a bid to enhance compatibility with NATO forces, writes Igor Bozinovski.

Elbit Systems of Israel will in February begin an upgrade at the Petrovec airbase of two Mi-17 transport and two Mi-24V attack helicopters, following ministry approval. The work will enhance the types' ability to undertake night operations.

Macedonia also intends to replace some outdated equipment with one new transport aircraft and several Western-sourced helicopters, and will by mid-2004 retire its three Sukhoi Su-25s and one Su-25UB.

Macedonia also plans to increase its budget for equipment modernisation from 5-14%, says the defence ministry.
