A CFM International CFM56-3C on a Malev Boeing 737-500 is poised to set an all-time record for time on wing by any engine in aviation history.
The Malev CFM56 has logged 40,000h and 17,000 cycles without a single removal, Jean-Pierre Vernon, CFMI vice-president, northern Europe – central/eastern Europe announced yesterday. That already makes the engine a record breaker for high-cycle, single-aisle aircraft.
At its current rate, the engine is expected by August to beat the 40,531h on-wing low-cycle record that was set in 2000 by a Rolls-Royce RB211 engine powering an Icelandair Boeing 757. At that time, the 757 had completed just 11,090 cycles. "Malev mechanics may have to go on strike because they have nothing to do," jokes Vernon.
