NASA's Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) entered a contingency mode on 15 April, when one of two hinges on its high gain antenna stopped moving. It was later taken out of safe mode with the antenna still stuck. The MGS had been returning to earth a continuous stream of images, including this view of finely etched wind-blown sand dunes, since the deployment of its antenna on 28 March. The MGS will continue to transmit, but only periodically as mapping has to be halted while the spacecraft is turned towards earth to transmit the images.
