Il-76/78
The four-turbofan Il-76M/MD Candid long-range transport continues as the main transport type of CIS air forces. India purchased 20 to replace its Antonov An-12s. A three-point hose-and-drogue tanker variant, the Il-78 Midas, became operational in 1987. Many of these aircraft were inherited by Ukraine, leaving the Russian air force with a shortfall. Around 20 A-50 Mainstay airborne warning and control system derivatives of the Il-76 are operational. The A-50U, an upgraded AEW variant, was shown in 1995.
