African budget operator Fastjet Group is planning to open several new routes for 2020, and has started the expansion by reinforcing its links to South Africa.

The airline is to start operating to Johannesburg from the Zimbabwean city of Bulawayo from 5 December.

Fastjet says the Embraer ERJ-145 service will operate up to twice-daily, with a total of 11 frequencies weekly, and complement its connection between Harare and Johannesburg.

Chief executive Mark Hurst says the route will offer a “unique schedule advantage” over current services.

“We are committed to growing the route and visitor numbers in both directions, and to expanding our overall Zimbabwe network,” he adds.

He says the airline is planning “several new routes” for the coming year.

Fastjet Group has been concentrating on Zimbabwe and South Africa after withdrawing from operations in Tanzania and being forced to abandon Mozambique as a result of increasing losses.
