Southwest Airlines has unveiled dozens of new routes for 2018, with the majority of them serving California.
The airline will introduce 19 new routes to California, and grow frequencies on an additional eight.
Southwest hopes to capitalise on its strong customer base in California, says the airline's chief revenue officer Andrew Watterson on the sidelines of the Boyd Group International Aviation Forecast Summit.
"In the large majority of cities where Southwest is number one, when we add new products, customers tend to buy it," he tells FlightGlobal.
"It's a concentrated addition of capacity but it's low-risk because many of the routes fly from Southwest's points of strength to our other points of strength."
The airline will face direct competition on some of the routes, with Alaska the only operator on four of the markets, FlightGlobal schedules data show.
