Ukrainian start-up carrier SkyUp Airlines is to open services to the United Arab Emirates, initially serving the city of Sharjah.

The operator states that it will operate to Sharjah from Kharkov weekly from 2 March, using Boeing 737-700s.

It will continue the service until May but plans to switch to the nearby Dubai airport “after completion of repairs”.

Dubai is undergoing substantial runway maintenance in April-May.

SkyUp chief Evgeny Haynatsky says Kharkov airport’s passenger numbers rose by 19% last year, and that he sees “great potential” in the area.
