A new battery system for the Boeing 777 has been developed and launched by Eldec and Saft. The entire system can directly replace original equipment without the need for aircraft rewiring.

Eldec is a Crane company. Saft is the battery division of Alcatel Cable.

The new system consists of a new Saft 582CH1 ultra low maintenance (ULM) battery and an Eldec 8-930-03 battery charger. The charger is the same as that installed in new Boeing 737NGs, 747-400s and 767-400s.

The nickel-cadium battery requires routine maintenance at one-year intervals. It is said to reduce both maintenance and operating costs.

The new system is designed enhance despatch reliability because of improved performance in hot weather as the battery system heats only when it discharges.
