Air Canada has cancelled an outstanding agreement to take three Airbus A340-600 aircraft, 10 years after placing its order for the type.
The Canadian flag-carrier had been among the first to sign for the A340-600 having committed to the aircraft ahead of its industrial launch in late 1997. It also signed for a pair of A340-500s at the time.
During the post-2001 air transport crisis, Air Canada initially deferred delivery of the A340-600s to 2004 and subsequently reached an agreement with Airbus under which it would defer them again until 2010.

Airbus has disclosed the Air Canada A340-600 cancellation in its latest order figures, covering the first half of 2008.
Air China’s order for 20 A330-200s, plus Italian carrier Air One’s agreement for 12 A350-800s and 12 A330-200s, and Kazakh airline Air Astana’s finalising a deal for six A320s helped the airframer post gross orders for 525 aircraft and a net total of 487.
Airbus also delivered 245 aircraft over the six months comprising 44 widebodies – four A380s among them – and 201 A320-family jets.
