AirAsia x is launching services to Abu Dhabi, its first destination in the Middle East and a potential transit point for future services to Europe.

The Malaysian long-haul low-cost carrier says the five-times-weekly service will start on 23 November using Airbus A340s.

AirAsia X already operates non-stop from Kuala Lumpur to London Stansted using A340s but the airline also operates Airbus A330s.

In late July AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani told ATI the airline was looking to have a transit point in the Middle East for services from Malaysia to Europe, Africa and other points in the Middle East.

He said at the time it was considering Abu Dhabi and Bahrain as the transit point.
