Seven world leading designs were honoured at the second annual Crystal Cabin Award ceremony last night. The awards were created last year by the Joint Initiative (JI) “Hamburg – the place for aviation” to pay tribute to innovative concepts. This year’s competition attracted 44 entries, of which 18 went through to the final round. Walter Birkhan JI’s project director said that standards were exceptionally high. “Each of the participants would have deserved a trophy.” B/E Aerospace took first place in the passenger comfort category for its First Class Sky Suite. Dasell won the Industrial Design segment for its washroom with integrated urinals, whilst STG Aerospace scooped top prize in the greener cabin health and safety category for its WEPPS next generation emergency lighting system.
Airbus won the Entertainment and Communication category for its Universal Wireless Backbone system, which creates a centralised interface for multiple wireless channels on board an aircraft. Best Materials and Components trophy went to Lufthansa Technik for its passive UHF radio frequency tagging technology, which uses a transponder to track objects.
There were also two commendation prizes, going to Airbus for its eco friendly fire protection system and AmSafe for its new child size seat harness.
