KLM has selected AirFi latest-generation portable wireless IFE for its Boeing 747 fleet.

It will be AirFi's first deployment alongside installed seatback IFE screens.

Thirteen 747-400s are being fitted with the AirFi system, launch of which will occur simultaneously fleet-wide in April 2019.

AirFi was selected for the remaining 747-400 fleet after a successful trial period over recent months on one of the airline's aircraft. "The quality of the current in-flight entertainment in the 747-400s is no longer of the level that it should be," says Rene de Groot, chief operating officer of KLM. "Because the aircraft will disappear completely from the fleet in the coming years, investing in new [embedded] systems is no longer profitable."

He adds: "With the AirFi system on board, we can provide the passengers with high-quality content via their own mobile devices.

"The airline had planned to fully retire its 747s by 2020, but by deferring its A350 deliveries, it has extended the life of the fleet."
