American Airlines has cancelled more than 900 flights for today as it continues carrying out re-inspections of its Boeing MD-80s to ensure compliance with an airworthiness directive.
The Oneworld alliance carrier says in a statement that it has cancelled “more than 900 flights” for 10 April. It cancelled 1,094 flights yesterday and 460 on 8 April.

American grounded its MD-80s earlier this week for the second time in two weeks to re-inspect the aircraft to ensure compliance with an airworthiness directive related to the bundling of wires in wheel wells. The groundings were required after the US FAA questioned the adequacy of the first round of inspections.
American says in its statement that as of the afternoon of 9 April it had completely inspected 179 MD-80s and more than 100 of these were undergoing work. Another 121 MD-80s remained to be inspected, it adds.
