Bangalore International Airport plans to build a second passenger terminal and expand its existing terminal to cater to growth in passenger traffic.
Construction of a second terminal building "will be initiated on an immediate basis", says the airport, which did not give a date for the start of construction.
The second terminal will be able to handle 15 million passengers annually in its first phase, and will eventually be able to handle 36 million passengers annually, adds the airport.
"Associated airside infrastructure will also be expanded to cater to the new terminal," it says.
The airport's existing terminal building, which can handle 12 million passengers annually, will be expanded as well to boost its capacity to 15 million passengers annually.
This will take 18 months to complete, says the airport, which handled 9.3 million passengers in 2009.
"We are excited by the opportunity of creating a new landmark in the city of Bangalore, and will ensure that the new passenger terminal combines the best in technology and processes with an iconic design that makes the people of Bangalore proud," says GV Krishna Reddy, a director on the airport's board.
Reddy is chairman of Indian conglomerate GVK Power & Infrastructure, which holds a 29% stake in the airport.
