Brazil has created a civil aviation authority to take over control of aviation regulation from the country’s ministry of defence.
The Brasilia-based Agencia Nacional de Aviacao Civil (ANAC) will be headed by Milton Zuanazzi and was launched last week at a ceremony attended by Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
During the ceremony, Lula said the ANAC’s creation responds to the “need of the Brazilian aviation industry to become internationally more competitive”.
Zuanazzi said a civilian agency is needed “to maintain and further develop Brazil’s high safety standards, which have converted Brazil into one of the safest regions to fly in the world”. But Brazil’s airline association SNEA says it “makes no sense to create a new CAA without having previously defined a new legal framework for civil aviation in Brazil”.
