The Transportation Safety Board of Canada today launched a watch list for "critical safety issues" impacting the country's transportation system.
Similar to the US National Transportation Safety Board's "Most Wanted" list, the Canadian effort is likewise designed to draw the attention of regulators, lawmakers and the public to persistent transportation problems.
"The TSB watch list took shape after analysts found troubling patterns in their work," states TSB chairman Wendy Tadros. "Many times, we arrive on the scene of an accident and see the same safety issues - issues that we have raised before."
The launch list contains nine safety issues covering marine, rail, air and multi-modal transportation sectors in total with three directed at air travel: risk of collisions between aircraft and vehicles or other aircraft at Canadian airports; collisions between aircraft and land or water while under crew control (referred to as controlled flight into terrain in the US) and landing accidents and runway overruns.
Suggested solutions to the three issues include the adoption of enhanced collision warning systems, wider use of situational awareness technology and longer runway safety areas or engineered arresting systems, respectively.
