Delta Air Lines plans to expand its onboard Internet service supplied by Gogo to 223 regional jets operated by its Connection Carrier partners.
The decision follows a disclosure by Delta to ATI and Flightglobal in August of this year that the carrier was giving serious consideration to offering Wi-fi on its larger 70-plus seat regional aircraft featuring two-class cabins.
Installations of equipment to support Wi-fi on the regional jets is scheduled to begin in January, and should be complete by year-end 2011, says Delta.
Atlanta-based Delta completed Gogo installations on its mainline domestic fleet earlier this month, and once the carrier completes equipping the 223 regional jets, Delta will offer Wi-fi on 772 aircraft.
Introducing Wi-fi is the latest enhancement Delta has announced to create seamless service between mainline and connection flights. Other product improvements include offering a first class cabin to 66 Bombardier CRJ700s, introducing a meal service in first class on regional jets and expanding the number of jetbridges at hubs to decrease ground-level boarding on regional jets.
