Delta Air Lines will return to Worcester next year, after a nearly two-decade hiatus from the Massachusetts airport.

The SkyTeam Alliance carrier will offer daily service to Detroit operated by SkyWest Airlines, airport operator Massport says. Service will begin in August 2019.

Delta declines to comment on what aircraft will operate the route. FlightGlobal schedules data shows SkyWest operating 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200s, 69-seat Bombardier CRJ700s and 76-seat Bombardier CRJ900s for the mainline carrier from Detroit.

“We’re excited to serve the second-largest city in New England," says Joe Esposito, senior vice-president of network planning at Delta, emphasising the carrier's connectivity over Detroit to 134 destinations around the world.

Delta previously served Worcester in the early 2000s, including service from Atlanta in 2000.

Worcester, which lacked commercial air service for years, has seen a renaissance in recent years. JetBlue Airways began serving the airport in 2013, and American Airlines will begin flights this October.
