European safety regulators have approved the Boeing MD-80 freighter conversion undertaken by US-based Aeronautical Engineers.

The company already had US FAA certification for the MD-80SF conversion, which it secured it February 2013.

Aeronautical Engineers says it has obtained similar supplementary type certificate clearance from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

The company says it is the only firm offering a freighter modification for the twinjet type.

“Everything [with EASA] progressed smoothly and as planned,” says its vice-president of operations, David McDonald.

Its MD-80SF conversion is offered alongside freighter modifications for the Boeing 737-200, -300 and -400.

Aeronautical Engineers is also working on conversions for the Bombardier CRJ200 and 737-800.
