El Al advances Trent purchase to deal with 787 snag

Israeli carrier El Al has brought forward the purchase of two Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines for its Boeing 787-9 fleet as part of an effort to deal with technical problems affecting the powerplants.

It says it has "advanced the purchase" of two engines which were originally supposed to be delivered to the carrier in 2023-24, receiving them in August.

The airline says it was advised by Rolls-Royce that certain parts on the Trent 1000 TEN engines would need replacing earlier than expected.

El Al discovered findings in two engines during July, the carrier has disclosed in its first-half financial statement.

It has replaced the engines with two spares while the problems are addressed.

El Al adds that it has discussed with the manufacturer a programme to replace engine parts which will take place over the course of 2019-21. It says it has four spare engines installed on its 787 fleet.
