Emirates chief digital and innovation officer Christoph Mueller has resigned and will leave the Middle Eastern airline in August.

The former Aer Lingus and Malaysia Airlines chief executive joined Dubai-based Emirates in September 2016 and was tasked with overseeing a "group-wide transformation" focused on migrating back-office systems to digital platforms.

Confirming his decision to resign, Emirates states: "He is working closely with the leadership team on a smooth transition."

It did not comment on why Mueller is stepping down.
