Emirates this week presented awards to some of its top UAE national trainees, to help highlight its UAE National Trainee Programme.
Although it employs more than 124 nationalities, the Dubai-based airline is committed to developing and nurturing local talent and runs graduate and trainee schemes specifically designed for UAE nationals.
The awards scheme was run in partnership with fuel company Chevron Global Aviation and recognised 10 UAE national trainees.
“Emirates’ commitment to the training and development of UAE nationals supports the Dubai government’s initiative to create a skilled workforce that will go on to be future business leaders,” says Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, who presented the awards.
The awards recognised learning achievements, contributions to teams and good working attitudes during on-the-job training.
The winners will attend a four-day business awareness and personal skills programme organised by Chevron in Singapore.
Emirates offers several schemes designed to recruit UAE nationals at all levels of education, including:
- National Graduate Trainee Programme
This is for UAE nationals aged 21-27 and holding a bachelor’s degree or higher diploma. It involves up to three and a half years of practical and classroom training both in Dubai and abroad and puts nationals on track to take on management roles within Emirates, in fields such as IT, HR and finance.
- National School-Leavers Training Programme
School-leavers aged between 18-25 with a minimum 10th grade certificate qualification are able to register on this scheme, with a year’s training provided, to work in administrative or customer service roles within areas of Emirates including Dnata Airport Operations, cargo, telephone sales and Emirates Airport Services.
- National Ab-Initio Pilot Programme
UAE national high school graduates hoping to become Emirates pilots can take advantage of this route. Available to those aged 17-30, the scheme involves a one-year foundation course in Dubai, 18 months flying training abroad, two months further training in Dubai and six months spent working as a cadet pilot, before becoming an Emirates first officer.
- Cabin Crew Training Programme
This scheme is also open to citizens of other Gulf Cooperation Council countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Training lasts for five weeks only, plus a three-month English course if required. It is open to high school graduates aged 20-30 (21-30 for GCC nationals), but has various stipulations, for example on height and weight.
- Aircraft Mechanic Trainee Programme
High school graduates with a science or technical specialism may apply for this programme, which is open to those aged 18-25 and provides two years of training at Dubai Men’s College, to graduate with a diploma in aviation maintenance. This is followed by 18 months training at Emirates and then a position as an aircraft mechanic.
