Ethiopian Airlines' technical division has developed capability to perform modular-level repairs on the Boeing 787-powering GE Aviation GEnx engine.

The Star Alliance carrier says Ethiopian Maintenance & Engineering Services becomes the first MRO provider in Africa with such capability, and "one of very few GEnx repair shops" in the engine manufacturer's global network.

"We are making additional investments to enhance our capability," states Ethiopian's chief Tewolde Gebremariam, noting that it targets full overhaul capability by mid-2019.

He specifies that Ethiopian intends to overhaul other airlines' GEnx engines as well its own.

Flight Fleets Analyzer lists Addis Ababa-based Ethiopian as the operator of 23 787s: 19 of the -8 variant and four of the -9.

Ethiopian says its base-maintenance facility, with Part-145 certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration, has approvals spanning the 757, 767, 777, 787, Bombardier Q400 and Airbus A350.

The airline adds that its Part-145 approvals from the European Aviation Safety Agency cover both base and line maintenance of the 737NG, 757, 767 and 777.

Boeing and Bombardier have both designated Ethiopian's MRO division as an approved service facility for base maintenance, notes the airline.
