Cai to head Air China

Chinese flag carrier Air China has promoted vice-president Cai Jianjiang, 43, to the top management post of president, replacing Ma Xulun.

The Beijing-based airline gave no reason for its replacement of Ma as president in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange, apart from to say that it was "due to personnel transfer".

Cai was responsible for marketing, sales and international affairs in his previous role, which he assumed in October 2002.

He joined Air China in 2001 as a general manager of its Shanghai branch and subsequently became assistant to the president and manager of the marketing department.

Between 1999 and 2000 he was president of Shenzhen Airlines. Cai graduated from the Beijing-based China Civil Aviation Institute in 1983.
