European turboprop manufacturer ATR has announced orders for 42 new aircraft and 72 options for the first half of this year.

It is a favourable improvement from the 40 total orders ATR recorded in 2009 and the 42 orders placed by customers in 2008.

The orders include a deal with Brazilian carrier Azul for 20 ATR 72-600s and a 10 aircraft order placed by Air Lease, the new venture of former ILFC CEO Steven Udvar-Hazy, announced today during the Farnborough Air Show.

As of 30 June ATR had 152 aircraft in its backlog representing more than two years of production.

The airframer has delivered 26 new aircraft during the first half of 2010.
