Alenia Aeronautica is teaming up with Romanian state-owned manufacturer Romaero to transfer some manufacturing work for the ATR 42 and ATR 72 regional turboprops from Naples to a site near Bucharest. The project is likely to lead to further collaboration, says Alenia's head of industrial compensation Pierluigi Parolin. "This is the first step. There will be other steps - one candidate is the C-27J," he says.

Parolin says the level of investment required in the project is relatively small, as the capabilities required to begin production of section 13 of the fuselage and carry out related engineering activities in Romania in six months to a year are already in place. The initiative will create at least 200 new jobs.
