Fire closes Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta airport

Operations at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International airport have been suspended after fire broke out in the international arrivals building.

Kenya Airports Authority says its fire and rescue team "is on the ground being assisted by G4S and the Nairobi fire brigade", adding: "Passengers have been evacuated to safety."

Flag carrier Kenya Airways has confirmed that all flights from the airport have been cancelled until further notice. "All our staff and customers are safe, and there is not damage to the aircraft," says chief executive Titus Naikuni in a posting on the airline's Facebook page. "One staff and a passenger had slight smoke inhalation and are safe in hospital for further investigation."

Five Kenya Airways flights due to land in the Kenyan capital were diverted to Mombasa.

The fire started at 04:35 local time (01:35 UTC), Kenya Airports tweeted. The cause of the fire "is yet to be established", it says. "The [fire] has been contained and so far no causalities have been reported."
