Lufthansa Group has selected Lithuanian maintenance provider FL Technics to complete base checks on 28 Airbus A320s, following previous co-operation between the two companies.
FL Technics says the first aircraft is scheduled to arrive at its Vilnius headquarters in early October. All of the narrowbodies covered by the new "long-term contract" will be serviced at the MRO provider's Lithuanian facilities – which also include a base maintenance site in Kaunas – by the end of next year.
The jets in question are operated by Lufthansa Group's network and point-to-point airlines.
FL Technics has previously completed airframe base maintenance checks on A320s operated by Eurowings, Germanwings and Swiss, under separate contracts.
Lufthansa Group's fleet includes around 300 A320-family jets. Thomas Ruckert, vice-president of base maintenance services at MRO unit Lufthansa Technik, states that the group has a two-tier strategy of employing external MRO providers – "like FL Technics" – and its own maintenance facilities.
"We always tender demand beyond our own capacity to leverage the very dynamic MRO market," he notes, crediting FL Technics with having provided a "very attractive commercial offer".
