Garuda Indonesia will lease two Boeing 737-800 converted freighters from GECAS from mid-2020.

The lessor states that the jets will join two other freighter aircraft used by Garuda's cargo unit.

“We look forward to working with GECAS in implementing the latest Boeing 737-800 freighter into our fleet,” says Mohamad Iqbal, Garuda Indonesia director of cargo and business development. “These newly converted 737-800 freighters will assist our growing operations as well as expanding our cargo program.”

GECAS has not identified the two aircraft that Garuda will receive.

The lessor was the launch customer for the Boeing Converted Freighter modification in 2016, which once completed turns a passenger 737-800 into a freighter capable of carrying up to 23.5t of payload across 12 maindeck pallet positions.

Garuda already operates 73 737-800s in its passenger operations, Cirium fleets data shows, of which seven are leased from GECAS.
