General Electric's overhaul shop in Wales is being prepared to service GE9X engines.
The Welsh government, confirming a £20 million ($25 million) investment of which it is contributing £5 million, says maintenance and repair of the GE9X "will safeguard over 400 jobs" at the facility in Nantgarw, near Cardiff. The GE9X is to power the in-development Boeing 777X.
Recruitment is under way to ensure that the site can "support growth relative to its current engine programmes", adds the Welsh government.
Today, the overhaul shop supports GE90s, CFM International CFM56s, Engine Alliance GP7200s and Rolls-Royce RB211s. Support of the Rolls-Royce engine is a legacy of the site's previous ownership by British Airways. GE still services that carrier's RB211s.
Nantgarw is the only GE-owned overhaul shop that supports GE90s, which power current-generation 777s.
