FedEx Express chief executive David Bronczek has taken over from Tony Tyler as chairman of IATA, charged with steering the body through what will undoubtedly be another turbulent 12 months for the industry.

"Tony has done a very good job; it's been a very difficult year," says the incoming chairman. While the economic picture has improved, Bronczek highlights the fragmented worldwide recovery, with Asia Pacific leading the way and Europe trailing the pack. North and Latin America, says Bronczek, are sitting somewhere in the middle.

He reiterates IATA's mood of cautious optimism, and, looking to the year ahead, says the focus will be on stability, profitability and safety. The Simplifying the Business initiative, and the cost savings it promises to deliver, will also remain a key priority.

"As we've seen from certain things, like the volcanic ash disruption, the recovery is so fragile that there needs to be a focus. That way we won't get ahead of ourselves," he says.
