International Airlines Group (IAG) has appointed Luis Gallego as chief executive of its new Madrid-based short-haul subsidiary, Iberia Express.

Gallego is chief operating officer at Barcelona-based low-cost carrier Vueling, in which Iberia holds a 45% stake.

Iberia Express plans to begin operations at the end of March with an initial fleet of four Airbus A320s, rising to 13 of the type by the end of next year.

The carrier will operate part of Iberia's short- and medium-haul network from a base at Madrid Barajas.
