Il-96 fleet grounded

Russia grounded the fleet of 14 Ilyushin Il-96-300s last week after faults were found in the braking system. Investigation and remedy could take up to two months.

The Il-96 fleet has been suffering inadvertent locking and unlocking of the brake discs, and jamming – problems that have long been known to operators and the manufacturer, says Ilyushin general director Victor Livanov. According to the Russian federal agency for industry, since 1993 there have been 19 such incidents, but never any groundings.

The grounding by Russia’s federal agency for transport safety results from an investigation into an incident this year, when a GTK Rossiya crew had to abort take-off of the Il-96-300PU presidential transport.
