Investigators in Indonesia are still trying to recover the cockpit-voice recorder from the Merpati Nusantara Xian MA60 which crashed on approach to Kaimana.

The Indonesian transport ministry said the recorder "cannot be retrieved" for the time being because the underwater current is "very swift".

It stated that the fuselage had been anchored to prevent it from drifting.

Flight MZ8968 from Sorong had conducted a left turn as part of the approach procedure for Kaimana's runway 01 on 7 May, and had indicated it was preparing to land before it lost contact.

While the ministry originally said there were 27 on board the aircraft, it states that it has recovered 22 victims with two crew members and a passenger yet to be located.
