Russian MRO specialist UTG Aviation Services intends to set up an advanced maintenance facility at St Petersburg Pulkovo airport.
The masterplan, presented during an international economic forum in St Petersburg, envisions investment of some Rb3.6 billion ($58 million) over the next three to five years in construction of a 14,000m2 hangar complex.
"It will be capable to accommodate the largest modern airliners, such as the Airbus A380," says UTG marketing director Mikhail Il'yn. "Also, there will be a noise-suppression stand for engine test runs after repair work."
Under a proposal submitted to St Petersburg's municipal government, which owns the airport, UTG would lease a site adjacent to the decommissioned runway. The company is looking to conclude an appropriate agreement shortly.
Employing 2,500 staff, UTG currently provides line and base maintenance services for all Boeing 737 models as well as the 767 and 777-200/300 through its engineering units at Moscow Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports, within the scope of EASA Part 145 approval.
UTG also performs ground-handling tasks for clients at both airports. Its latest new customer is Hong Kong Airlines, which earlier this month started a thrice-weekly Airbus A330 service to Vnukovo.
