The Middle East's only executive aviation airport is officially open for business, whatever the weather.

Abu Dhabi's downtown Al Bateen airport has been approved as Category 1, allowing aircraft to make instrument landing system approaches in poor visibility.

Although the UAE enjoys perfect flying conditions most days, occasional sandstorms and fog can blight airport operations. At a handover ceremony yesterday, Steve Jones, newly appointed managing director of the former military air base, said Category 1 approval "gives us the ability to handle more in-bound aircraft landing within a shorter period of time and allows aircraft to land accurately and safely even during low visibility conditions".
