Melbourne Airport posted a 5% increase in passenger traffic in last year's fourth quarter.

Total traffic rose to 6.7 million from 6.4 million in three months to December, says Melbourne Airport.

International passenger numbers rose 14% to 1.4 million and domestic traffic rose 3% to 5.3 million, it says.

The airport did not give a forecast for 2010, although it does say that a slew of new services are starting this year.

At the beginning of this month, Qatar Airways launched daily services to the airport, Qantas Airways on 18 January started using Airbus A380s on the Melbourne-London Heathrow route. In March, V Australia is launching Melbourne-Johannesburg and Viva Macau is increasing its Melbourne-Macau service.
