MTU foresees PW2000 maintenance demand for 'at least' 10 years

German engine specialist MTU Aero Engines has secured MRO contracts for Pratt & Whitney P2000 engines to continue its support for the legacy powerplant for "at least another 10 years".

MTU says it recently signed multiple PW2000 support agreements with undisclosed customers, with a total value of more than $700 million.

The PW2000 was an option on Boeing 757s, and is used to power Boeing C-17 Globemaster III military transports.

MTU supports the engine at its overhaul shop in Hannover and has developed services aimed at reducing maintenance costs for mature engines with a limited operating life.

This includes employment of used serviceable material (USM), component repairs and provision of lease engines.

The Hannover facility has completed around 650 PW2000 shop visits since the engine was introduced at the site in 1988, and today handles around 20 engines of the type per year.

Chief programme officer Michael Schreyogg states that demand for PW2000 support "remains strong".

As a result of the continued activity, US maintenance provider AAR has extended a supply contract with MTU for the supply of USM for PW2000s.

The contract was originally signed in 2009 and has been extended until 2024, AAR says.
